China to install 6,000 screens in universities

(china.org) China's top media regulator and education department signed a memo on Tuesday to launch a nationwide campus theater construction campaign.

The State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television and the Ministry of Education announced they would help establish a "National Campus Movie Theater Chain" and try to install 6,000 movie screens in universities over three to five years. Those screens would meet the needs of higher education students and would also benefit students in nearby primary schools and high schools.

The new theaters would help disseminate socialist education and serve as a platform to promote Chinese culture on campus. The new facilities would also help spread good stories about China, strengthen China's voice and help train the talent needed to move forward with new creative industry initiatives.

The National Campus Movie Theater Chain will be set up by three entities: China Education Publishing & Media Group Ltd., China Education TV, and Huaxia Film Distribution Company. The project will receive support from the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television and the Ministry of Education.

Vice Minister of Education Du Yubo stated he hoped the new theater chain will enrich campus cultural activities and promote new approaches to education. Du also hopes that the theaters can succeed in both social and economic aspects.

The vice president of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television Tong Gang added that the campus movie theater campaign has very important strategic significance and that he hoped the theater chain can explore new models and operating procedures.
