China Still Building Golf Courses After Ban, China Daily Says

Source: Bloomberg

May 5 (Bloomberg) -- A Chinese government ban has failed to stop construction of golf courses, the China Daily reported, citing Li Jianqin, head of the law enforcement and supervision department with the Ministry of Land and Resources.

Finding illegally built golf courses is at the top of the ministry’s agenda, the Beijing-based English-language newspaper said. The government imposed a moratorium on golf courses in 2004 to preserve land resources, according to the report.

Approval of a plan to build golf courses on the island province of Hainan, which aims to become a resort destination, doesn’t mean other local governments can ignore the 2004 ban, the newspaper said.

A permanent membership at a golf course in Beijing costs 300,000 yuan ($44,000) to 1 million yuan, China Daily reported.
