The 11th Panchen Lama Bainqen Erdini Qoigyijabu was named a member of China’s top political advisory body, the official Xinhua News Agency reported today.

The Panchen Lama was among 13 people appointed to the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Xinhua reported.

The Panchen Lama is Tibet’s second-highest religious leader. China appointed the Panchen Lama in 1995 over the objections of the Dalai Lama. Tibet’s government-in-exile said the real Panchen Lama was imprisioned the same year by China at the age of six.
